What survives when a culture is silenced?
This question lies at the heart of our upcoming concert on Friday, 24 April 2026 at 19:00, as we turn our focus to Verfemte Musik - works by composers whose voices were suppressed, banned, or erased under totalitarian regimes.
At a time when freedom of expression remains fragile in many parts of the world, this program invites us to listen not only to extraordinary chamber music, but also to stories of resilience, exile, and defiance.
Gideon Klein’s String Trio, composed in Theresienstadt shortly before his murder in Auschwitz, stands as a powerful testament to artistic resistance in the face of annihilation. Bohuslav Martinů’s Second String Trio, written on the eve of his exile in 1937, captures the clarity and urgency of a world on the brink. Erwin Schulhoff’s String Sextet blends postwar expressionism with defiance; later denounced as “degenerate,” he died in a concentration camp. In contrast, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s youthful sextet evokes the richness of a cultural world that would soon be silenced by fascism.
This program will be performed by:
Cosima Soulez Larivière, violin
Georgii Moroz, violin
Haesue Lee, viola
Kyungsik Shin, viola
Leonard Disselhorst, cello
Yehjin Chun, cello
Together, these works form a constellation of voices that refused to be silenced: each bearing witness to the enduring power of art in times of oppression.
We warmly invite you to join us for this concert.
Until soon at Tonhain.
