We are thrilled to announce Tonhain Kollektiv’s Season 3 – Crossings: Migrations through Music, our third full season of concerts, running from September 2026 to June 2027 at Tonhain.
Ticketing will be split into two phases: tickets and subscriptions for the first half of the season (Fall 2026) are now available on this website. Tickets for the 2027 concerts will go on sale in December 2026.
This season, we will continue the highly popular interdisciplinary component to our programming: three Interludes that bring music into dialogue with philosophy, video installation, and dance. These events complement six full-length concerts and deepen our exploration of migration not just as a musical theme, but as a multifaceted unifying element. Season 3 explores how composers and artists have been influenced by migrations of ideas, people, and the natural world across the centuries.
Our season opens with Concert: Imagined Crossings on 25 September 2026 at 19:00, featuring Schoenberg’s timeless masterpiece, String Quartet No. 2, Op. 10, where he crosses into atonality. This will be accompanied by music that reflects the rich 20th-century dialogue between European, Middle-Eastern, and East Asian musical traditions: Debussy’s colorful Images II for solo piano, Ravel’s Jewish prayer Kaddish, Takemitsu’s meditative Between Tides for Piano Trio, and Szymanowski’s sensuous song cycle, Songs of the Infatuated Muezzin, Op. 42.
In Concert: Natural Crossings (23 October 2026), we explore music’s reflection on natural journeys, with works by Takemitsu, Saariaho, Haydn, Crumb and Jon Rose/Hollis Taylor. The season continues with a special Interlude: Kafka Fragments on 20 November, showcasing Kurtág’s Kafka Fragments for solo violin and soprano, complemented by philosophical reflections from speaker Florian Goldberg. Kurtág’s intensely concentrated musical language brings Kafka’s unpublished letters and journals to life in a sequence of powerful fragments that move between intimacy, irony, and alienation: all concerning the existential search for one’s life path.
In our final concert of the year, we have Concert: Sounds from the New World (11 December 2026), where we will feature the cultural and musical exchange between the New World and Europe. Works from composers William Grant Still, Dvořak, Caroline Shaw, and Ginastera will knit a diverse tapestry of different influences and cultures from different eras in one evening.
We are delighted to welcome a host of returning and new guest artists to the Tonhain stage this season. This season sees the Tonhain debut of internationally acclaimed performers including Noa Wildschut (violin), Eun Che Kim (violin), Duangamorn Fu (Soprano), Nilay Özdemir (viola), Michael Lewin (violin), Chiara Sannicandro (violin), and Johanna Vargas (soprano).
Season 3 is an invitation to experience our relationship to migration through music. Join us as we explore these different kinds of journeys as an artistic principal across different lands and eras. We can’t wait to share it with you.
