Verstecke sind unzählige, Rettung nur eine,
aber Möglichkeiten Der Rettung wieder
so viele wie Verstecke.
-Franz Kafka

Our Season 3 is in full swing and we are so thrilled with the enthusiastic response to our first two concerts of CROSSINGS - Migrations through Music. On Friday, November 20 at 7pm, we’ll present our first interdisciplinary interlude of the season with György Kurtág’s masterpiece Kafka Fragments for violin and soprano. Only a handful of tickets remain!
The renowned Hungarian composer celebrates his 100th birthday this year and has been one of the most influential figures in the development of musical composition throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Based on Kafka’s unpublished diaries, letters, and texts, these fragments meditate on existential questions of finding one’s path in life. Interwoven between the short movements of Kurtág’s work, our dear friend and returning collaborator Florian Goldberg will offer original philosophical reflections that engage with these interconnected themes. We are honored that he is returning to offer his insight and imagination to our program after the incredibly moving reflections he shared with us during February’s interlude Human Acts.

We are also delighted that, alongside Tonhain Kollektiv’s own Luke Hsu on violin, we will be joined for this performance by internationally acclaimed soprano Johanna Vargas. One of the leading voices in the global contemporary music scene, Johanna’s vocal beauty and virtuosity in coloratura find their counterpart in a captivating physical and dramatic presence, equally at home in theatrical and experimental performance settings as in the nuanced demands of chamber music and solo performances in the concert hall.
We look forward to seeing you back at Tonhain in two weeks!
