Season 0: roots

It is with great pleasure and excitement that we announce our opening season, Season 0: Roots, from April to June 2024 on the site of our upcoming home concert hall, Tonhain, in Steglitz. This three-concert sneak peek season is an introduction to our Kollektiv, the music we love, and our vision for future seasons. It offers a taste of the style of programming we aim to bring to you: the juxtaposition of outstanding music from past and present, works by well-known composers and those you’ve probably never heard of, and a focus on our home city of Berlin as an exceptional center of creativity. Season 0 also allows our concertgoers a unique behind-the-scenes view of the construction process of building a modern recording studio and chamber music hall. You will be able to witness the evolution and fine-tuning of the architecture and acoustics from concert to concert.

Furthermore, Season 0, like all our future seasons, follows an interdisciplinary theme: what influences both within and outside of music have inspired us and made us the artists we are today? Our identity as a Kollektiv has been shaped inevitably by our home concert hall, Tonhain, which started its life as a cinema in the early 1900s. “Roots of Tonhain” on Friday, April 26 at 19:00 explores the contributions of film composers to concert music: we will perform works by contemporary composers Nicole Lizée, Tan Dun, and John Corigliano, as well as legendary film composer Korngold’s celebrated Piano Quintet. “Origins of Chamber Music” on Friday, May 24 at 19:00 looks back to discover the socio-historical origins of chamber music, the art form which is the primary focus and inspiration of our Kollektiv. Taking as a centerpiece Beethoven’s groundbreaking String Quartet Op. 131, our program reveals what influences enabled the development of chamber music to reach such great heights. Our season finale, “Made in Berlin” on Wednesday, June 19 at 19:00, turns its attention to Berlin, our home and the city in which we have studied and launched our professional careers. Culminating in Mendelssohn’s jubilant String Octet, this program celebrates the rich heritage of composers who have contributed to Berlin’s cultural life.

Our Season 0 features members of Tonhain Kollektiv in concert alongside several outstanding young guest artists who also call Berlin home: internationally acclaimed violinists Mayumi Kanagawa, Miriam Helms Ålien, Suyoen Kim, Juliette Beauchamp, and Cosima Soulez Larivière, as well as renowned pianist Yoonji Kim. They are all active as freelancers, chamber musicians, soloists, and concertmasters in Berlin and around the world. We are joined additionally by two of our mentors and inspirational figures in the Berlin cultural scene: renowned violist Hartmut Rohde and celebrated cellist Jens Peter Maintz.

As construction in the hall is still ongoing, admission will be free and there will only be a limited number of seats. Therefore, if you are interested in attending one of our Season 0 concerts, please write us an email at tonhainkollektiv@gmail.com to ask for availability.
